My name is Ejay Tupe. I am an urban missionary, the Director of the Toronto Urban Missions Hub, and a PhD student in Contextual Theology. My life is defined by the convergence of two worlds: the gritty, vibrant reality of the city streets and the reflective, transformative space of theological inquiry.
Born in the Philippines and raised in the diverse cultural mosaic of Mississauga after immigrating at age 11, I developed a sensitivity to those on the margins early on. Today, that calling has anchored me in the heart of downtown Toronto for over 20 years. I live and serve here not merely as an observer, but as a neighbour committed to a “posture of presence.”
The Ministry of Presence & Leadership
As a Mission Canada urban worker and the Director of the Toronto Urban Missions Hub for the PAOC, I work to bridge the gap between the church and the city. My ministry is holistic and “messy”—it takes place where people struggle to find housing, food security, and dignity.
I don’t just advocate for charity; I advocate for justice. Most recently, this has meant leading the emergency response for over 400 African refugees and asylum seekers, coordinating with local churches such as Dominion Church International to provide shelter when the city’s systems were overwhelmed. Whether organizing the “Our City Toronto” urban ministry conference to equip other leaders or sitting with the unhoused on a street corner, my goal is to be a “thought disturber,” challenging the status quo to dream of prophetic possibilities and catalyzing collective impact.
The Scholar-Practitioner
My work on the sidewalk has driven me into the seminar room. Realizing that complex urban issues require robust theological answers, I am currently pursuing a PhD in Contextual Theology at the University of Toronto (Toronto School of Theology).
I am not retreating into an ivory tower; I am bringing the questions of the street into the academy. My research examines how faith interacts with the socio-economic realities of urban life, equipping me to articulate a faith that is intellectually deep and socially relevant. This academic pursuit is the natural extension of my ministry, allowing me to serve the city with greater precision and wisdom.
A Unified Vision
Alongside my wife, Cheryl Walsh (Executive Director of Converge Canada), I am committed to a life of radical hospitality and service. We believe that we are “better together.” Whether I am lecturing in a classroom, strategizing with city officials, or walking the streets of Leslieville, my mission remains the same: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
